LONGMAN & EAGLE
Im excited to start to leak a bit of info on a project im involved in that has been in the works for ages. Myself, Peter and Bruce from the Empty Bottle and Robert from Mode carpentry are opening a modern take on an old Chicago neighborhood inn (called Longman & Eagle) – a place that has a bar and restaurant on the first floor (opening late January), with overnight rooms on the second, six in our case (opening Spring 2010).
Drinking in Chicago has its origins in two places, the most influential and oldest of which is the inn (later becoming ‘tavern’), establishments that offered drinking, eating and sleeping. The history here is both colorful and rich, and it was at places such as The Green Tree and The Sauganash where much of the city’s social life revolved in its early years.
Longman & Eagle is a look back, re imagining this age-old concept through a contemporary lens, providing urban travelers a refuge that appeals to a variety of senses - be they aesthetic, consumptive, culinary or restorative - done in a way that is accessible, considered and innovative. The sort of place where a man can get a shot with breakfast, where local politicians might trade votes for whiskey, and one that reflects Chicago’s unique neighborhood-based diversity.
